[111206]A Look into How Girls’ Generation’s Concepts Are Formed

Girls’ Generation’s “The Boys” heroine concept.

In August of 2007, Girls’ Generation debuted with a mysterious, cheerful dance and song titled “Into the New World”, wearing Converse sneakers and pastel tone skirts. When promoting their remake of “Girls’ Generation” by Lee Seungchul, they showed a “young lady” image with a preppy look.

The sexy uniform concept from 2009’s “Tell Me Your Wish”.

They showed the charms of “grouping” by having all nine members wear the same outfits for “Gee” and “Tell Me Your Wish”.

SM Entertainment’s visual directing team leader, Min Heejin, stated, “After hearing ‘Gee’, we wanted to create an ’80′s Brooke Shields/Phoebe Cates image, so we had them wear white t-shirts with jeans, or the colored skinny jeans.” She said she chooses the outfit concepts by matching them with the first image she’s struck with after hearing the song. The sexy uniforms for “Tell me Your Wish” and the cheerleader concept for “Oh!” were completed the same way. She also got the image of Jessica Alba in the film “Sin City” after hearing “Run Devil Run”, and the Bond Girl image from “Hoot”.

For their latest single, “The Boys”, to fit the confident lyrics and music, she chose a “heroine” concept. Unlike their previous unified outfits, this heroine concept emphasized each members’ individual charms and tastes or preferences. However, each member was still unified with each other with modified equestrian uniforms and training outfits. Each member also freely switched up their costumes by wearing skirts, hot pants, pants, capes, and jackets. This could have been unfamiliar to those who remember the nine members wearing the same exact outfits.

Team leader Min stated, “I got some inspiration by watching the finale of the fashion show for the lingerie brand, Victoria’s Secret, where all the models appear together, all wearing different types of lingerie.” She revealed, “‘Healthy girls’ will be the ground rule of Girls’ Generation’s future concepts.”

[Writer’s note] Updated with purchase links.

Girls’ Generation will be releasing a second version of their third album, entitled “Mr. Taxi”, on December 8th, 2011. The album will contain thirteen tracks with the addition of the English version of “The Boys”. The “Mr. Taxi” track will be moved to the first track, and the Korean version of “The Boys” track moved to the second.

During their promotions for “The Boys” earlier this year, Girls’ Generation also performed “Mr. Taxi” wearing outfits reminiscent of police officers. With the unveiling of the album cover, fans were excited to see that the group chose similar outfits for the concept of the second version of their album. In addition, while the concept for “The Boys” consisted of a unique outfit for each member, “Mr. Taxi” features a return to identical outfits.

Twitter users quickly reacted to news of the upcoming album release and to the revealing of the album cover, as “Mr. Taxi” trended worldwide at number four.

[111206]Seohyun Gives Advice to ‘KPOP Star’ Competitors

With their prior experience as idols, 2PM’s Nichkhun, 2NE1′s Gong Minzy, and Girls’ Generation’s Seohyun gave “KPOP Star” competitors some useful advice.

Seohyun, Minzy, and Nichkhun recalled their audition experiences in detail, and felt for the participants of SBS’s “Survival Audition KPOP Star”. They gave “KPOP Star” participants audition tips based off of their own experiences, and delivered sincere support messages.

Girls’ Generation’s Seohyun, who auditioned when she was in fifth grade, talked about her unique audition experience by revealing, “I actually sang a children’s song when I auditioned.” Seohyun stated, “My heart was fluttering and I was nervous. I didn’t think there was a way to look good to the judges. (What’s important for auditions is) your determination for reaching your own dream. You have to have a clear dream, and it’s important that you are prepared to accept any advice and things like that from someone. Only then will you be able to grow and continue on after accepting things.”

[111206]Girls’ Generation Interviewed on American Radio

Back at the end of October, Girls’ Generation came to New York City for SM TOWN Live in New York. While they were in town they stopped by the studio of Elvis Duran and the Morning Show, a syndicated radio program, to sit down for an interview.

TJ, the host for the interview, welcomed the girls warmly and provided a fun atmosphere. Unsurprisingly, Jessica and Tiffany answered the majority of questions due to their being fluent in English, but Sooyoung got to chime in with her fluent Japanese as she said hi to one of TJ’s friends.

Jessica and Tiffany talked a lot about their pre-debut days and how they came to be in Korea and part of Girls’ Generation. The girls also showed their thanks to TJ by giving him a copy of their album and a photobook.

The interview was very entertaining and got to show off some back story to Girls’ Generation, as well as some of the charms that makes them loved by so many. Check out the full interview below, or head over to the Elvis Duran and the Morning Show website to download the interview.

[111204]The Hyperactive Black Pearl: A Portrait of Yuri for Her 22nd (23rd) Birthday

(Yuri at the Salvatore Ferragamo event)

It’s that time of year again – not Christmas quite yet, but close enough for us SONEs. Today is our very own Kwon Yuri’s 22nd birthday! Here at Soshified, we all wish her a happy birthday, hope that she enjoys it with loved ones, and will have many more to come.

Where should we start on why we love her? Yuri started off being called the “Black Pearl” – attributing to her tan, dark (well, darker than the other girls, at least) skin and “pearly” features. While the other girls had “milky white” skin, she was the chocolate milk of the group, already standing out a bit from everyone else. She also struts her stuff, and dances as only fitting for one of the group’s lead dancers.

(Yuri’s sexy photospread for Cosmopolitan magazine)

But one of the most striking things about Yuri is not her on-stage image. Instead, it’s her personality off-camera that has captured fans so much. While she shows off her curvy body and dance moves during performances, her real personality leaves many in a state of pleasant, giggly surprise. She is one of the most notorious pranksters in the group. From tying all the girls’ shoelaces together and running away, or helping accomplice Yoona plant whoopee cushions under unsuspecting chairs, she’s done it all. She has prank-called Sunny during her broadcast, played off forgetting lyrics by smiling and nodding, and planted fake rats in trashcans. On top of her pranks, she also has a certain charm about her. She talks to herself when she’s angry, makes lists when she’s arguing with others and debates each point, and sleeps with her tongue sticking out.

(Yuri snoozing away on Invincible Youth)

All of this help SONEs think of Yuri as a genuine person. She’s not just performer Yuri, the “Black Pearl” dancer who captures hearts and eyes, but real, awesome person Yuri, who appeals to fans offstage. Her personality can be described as downright silly, but she is certainly serious at times. The girl manages to juggle stressful idol life with her theater arts major at Chung Ang University, and even her professors comment on her hard work. As fans, we all love and appreciate all sides of Yuri, because we know she’s an amazing performer, hard worker, and great person. We love how she can pull off the pretty-boy look in a suit, pitch a mean side-arm, steal baby formula from Kyungsan, and is a “perfect type-AB”. We agree when Lee Hyori said that Yuri would be a successful solo artist, though we knew it already. SONEs love Yuri not because of any single thing. We love her because she is an all-around, crazy fun, down-to-earth, adorable yet sexy paragon of an idol.

She once was a rookie. We all remember when she was trying to find her image and persona. Maybe she found that she didn’t need a persona and instead just needed to be herself. She is (according to various psychologists) the happiest member of Girls’ Generation, and her constant smiling and need for entertainment do attest to that. Whether she’s busy learning new dance moves (or forgetting them), exercising religiously to keep that figure in shape, or grinding ma in the early mornings to nourish her body, she gives it her genuine 100% effort. But more importantly, she gives Girls’ Generation something they appreciate and need in their busy schedules: a friendly, devious smile soon to be followed by a joke or prank.

(MC YulTi on Music Core)

So on this day, we just want to wish a truly happy, happy birthday to Yuri, the girl whom we watched grow into a woman while never losing her inner child. We want her to know we are proud of her work, love her for who she is, and hope she never loses her smile. So for now, happy 22nd Kwon Yuri. You deserve it.

[December 5th, 2011]Getting to know Kwon Yuri on 1205

It’s been 4 years since Girls’ Generation made their debut. These 4 years have made her grow up, many things changed but she is still Kwon Yuri. Some of us have been a fan for 4 years, while some had just joined this fandom, but does anyone really know her well?

On this special occasion, perhaps you can take some time to know more about the birthday girl. I can’t be sure how much more you’ll know about her after reading this, but at least I can be sure, that you’ll love her more after today.

Kwon Yuri is a dangerous person. The more you know about her, the deeper you fall in love with her. You don’t know her, not because of your ignorance, it’s simply because there’s too much to be discovered in her.

She is not someone who grins all day, simple-minded and mischievous;
She has thoughts, goals and dreams, she is someone who works hard anytime anywhere;
She doesn’t like losing, but never insist to win;
She is hardworking and enthusiastic, not for the victory, but to enjoy the process;
She is not strong, she just wants herself to be strong;
She is not open-minded about everything, she just wants herself to be open-minded;
She is polite, friendly to everyone, but not everyone can be close to her;

Not everyone can open the door of her heart, but to those who did, she treats them well, from the bottom of her heart.

The Director of the television programme ‘Girls go to School’ described her this way:
“Differing from her quiet and elegant appearance, she is a soft-hearted girl who loves aegyo. No matter how tired she is, once the filming starts, she works harder than anyone else. Her character? Straightforward without affectation. Her charms? The instinct to be funny hiding inside her. In life? She gives her best at any time. Full of talents, with unstoppable attractiveness. She’s a girl like a chameleon.”

She’s born to be an artiste, every members says so.

Taeyeon said, “Her smile is friendly and kind, but too dazzling. I almost thought that she was already a debuted artiste.”
Sooyoung said, “She has too many talents. I could already predict that she’s going to succeed in the future.”
Yoona chose her as the member whom she admires the most. She said, “I admire her appearances when she is dancing. Her dance has a magical charm that can conquer the audiences.”

But in fact, she is not a genius.

She wrote, “A genius cannot win a hardworking person, a hardworking person cannot win a person in enjoyment”.

Just like her motto, instead of a genius, she is simply a hardworking person.

She said, “I’m the slowest at memorizing dance steps.”
For a member who’s slowest at memorizing choreography, how much time must she put into practice?
Indeed, the reason for her to be liked by everyone, does not just limit to her outer appearances.

see her.

Perhaps we have neglected some of the past history, history that we all want to forget. There is a need to recall them, because it tells us how much things Kwon Yuri is hiding in her, how much she has experienced, suffered, and how much she has changed and grown.

Do you still remember the Tossi Blog she had?

There, she updated things that we couldn’t see. She displayed the true sides of her – her real feelings, tears and laughter. She told us that she heard SONE’s fan chant. She said, “Sones are the best, you support us for everything we’ve said and done.” She told us that she wore the 1st anniversary T-shirt. She told us that.. Right now it’s Girls’ Generation, in the future it’s Girls’ Generation, forever… It’s Girls’ Generation.

On 19th November 2008, she updated her blog for the last time.
Then it’s the dark season we can never forget.
In the space only belonged to her and her fans, filled with spams from Antis.
That night, she closed the blog.

But perhaps, what she had closed, wasn’t just a blog.

Since when did she stop doing things that she used to do?
She isn’t mischievous anymore, she doesn’t laugh without control anymore, she doesn’t shed tears in front of the camera anymore. She doesn’t allow herself to be fail anymore.
Whenever we want to comfort her, we realise that she has already wiped away her tears, and covered her sadness with a smile.

Taeyeon said, that whenever she is troubled, Yuri will come to her side and infect her with her brightness. Taeyeon said she likes Yuri, for being the tonic, vitamin and endorphin. But a member like this, is also someone she worries for.

Maybe Yuri did not change, she just became stronger. She has become stronger, a stronger guardian for SNSD, and for SONE.
She said, “To me, SNSD is like my heart. Because of SNSD, I can run, I can feel the excitement, and I can feel that I am alive.”

To her, SNSD and Sone play special roles in her life, they are the people she wants to protect, she has to protect, and she has the ability to protect. Then perhaps thinking of this, we can be less worried for her even if she cries, we can have less heartache whenever she suffers. Because she is working hard not without a reason, She is sacrificing, changing and growing for the people she loves.

Being a person who makes up the group of people Yuri became stronger for, what we should do, is not just to cry together with her, and worry for her every time. We have to become stronger with her, to prove that we are people who deserve the blood, sweat and tears she has put in.

Yuri is enjoying her life as an SNSD member, we are enjoying our lives as fans of Girls’ Generation. Now that the girls have become the top girl group, this fandom seems almost perfect. But there are in fact many things we can do, for us and for the girls. They are hiding too much of their tears and weariness from us. Be stronger, because we want to tell Yuri that she is allowed to cry, allowed to show any emotion without control, we’re there to be the pillars supporting her and other 8 girls at the back. Whenever they need us, just turn back, they’ll see a pink ocean behind telling them, we are here.

To end this, I would like to wish our beloved Yuri a happy 23rd birthday. Thanks to her for everything she has done. I hope that we can see a happy Kwon Yuri forever.

Right now, forever and always it’s Girls’ Generation.
